I’m trying to find a simple candy bar or flip phone that will accept a Verizon smart phone SIM card. The idea is to have an inexpensive backup for those times when a smartphone is accidentally rendered useless, a child needs a simple phone for use on a trip, or someone has lost phone privileges but we want them to still have basic phone service.
Any ideas?

Not that I can think of, unless AT&T offers one (I know my carrier offers one). Find out the model and buy for cheap online.

The Samsung Rugby was my most recent experience with a no frills cellphone, back in my government days, a couple years ago. $150 unlocked on Amazon. You can also pick up a nano/micro SIM card adapter at Walmart for $5.

Hmm, I don’t see much. Here you can get a Moto E4 for a $100: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16875209524 which should work with Verizon, but that’s still a smartphone, and $100 is still a bunch of money. I don’t see any of the $20-30 phones that will work on CDMA networks. I’d guess your best option would be to look for a used phone?

When I was in CA for the summer, I just bought a random Samsung or whatever at a small electronics
corner store for 30 bucks, which included a
1 month pre-paid plan as well. I also saw a selection of similarly priced phones at Best buy, they had all the major providers covered so I had no worries about the single-provider locks.

Yeah, part of the plan is to force the offender to suffer with the basics for a while. Any suggestions for a used marketplace?

Pre-paid might be the answer.

I’ll have to swing by the Verizon store.

That looks like a solid option. Thanks.

Have you seen the new Relay “phone?” I say phone in quotations because it is the most stripped down communication device ever, it do es n’t even have a screen . It’s basically a walkie-talkie with cell service. But for kids it could be perfect. They can communicate with other Relay devices and anyone with the Relay app on their phone.
I don’t think you can just pop in an existing sim card and go, but the devices are only $50 and I think it’s like $10 a month for service on them. I think it’s kind of neat and I have been considering getting a couple of them for my kids .

Not really, you should summon Miss Mercedes, she enjoys a good phone flip.

I’ve been summoned! Surprisingly I don’t have much knowledge in the way of non-smartphones (or as the kids call them, “feature phones”). I suppose anything unlocked for CDMA or locked to Verizon would do.
If you’re interested in cheap as heck smartphones, I’d be looking at something pitiful like a BLU (assuming they have any models that work on CDMA) or some several gens old phone from eBay. :)

Thanks. The idea is to have a backup for emergencies (like when my wife dropped hers into the toilet), a cheap/less desirable phone for times when the kids are off to camp and I don’t want them to take their more expensive phones, and as a feature-free phone for use when a child has lost their smartphone privileges but we need the child to have a phone on hand for emergencies. That last scenario is important since our kids are commuting half an hour or more to get to school.

Basic phones are available in prepaid form for less than $30. The problem is that even with a Verizon SIM card to move from phone to phone you still have to call Verizon to activate the new phone
serial number. For a price of course. That’s how it worked some years ago at least
